Uncompromising Passion
42 Below was founded in 1996 by Geoff Ross, an advertising executive who transitioned into spirits production after his wife gifted him a small pot still. Geoff began distilling in his garage in New Zealand, eventually selling the first commercial bottling in 1999. The brand name references New Zealand's position on the 42nd parallel south, a geographic marker central to the company's identity and marketing. Originally produced using a small pot still, 42 Below evolved into a sophisticated operation employing a four-column continuous distillation process. The vodka is crafted from locally sourced non-GMO wheat and blended with pristine water drawn from an extinct volcanic aquifer, ensuring exceptional purity. The brand gained international recognition, winning a Double Gold medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2006. In December 2006, Geoff Ross sold the company to Bacardi in a lucrative deal, bringing 42 Below into a global spirits portfolio while maintaining its commitment to quality and sustainability. Today, 42 Below remains a respected premium vodka brand, celebrated for its versatility in cocktails and its distinctive New Zealand terroir.
