Uncompromising Passion
Wheatley Vodka represents Master Distiller Harlen Wheatley's venture into vodka production at Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky. Rather than sourcing neutral grain spirit like most vodka producers, Wheatley developed his own wheat recipe and distills it using a proprietary micro-still. The process involves two separate grain recipes, each distilled seven times independently, then merged and distilled three additional times for a total of ten distillations. This meticulous approach reflects Buffalo Trace's bourbon-making philosophy applied to vodka. The spirit is triple-filtered using locally sourced limestone-filtered water, the same high-quality ingredients deployed in the distillery's prestigious bourbon programs. Wheatley has stated that most vodkas rely on neutral spirit and packaging rather than craft distillation, making his approach unusual in the category. The result is a delicate, complex vodka that retains subtle character while maintaining the clean profile expected of premium vodka.
