The Essence
"Swedish premium vodka crafted from seven heirloom potato varietals grown in Cape Bjäre, delivering complex flavors of chocolate, caramel, and dusty spice."

Uncompromising Passion
Karlsson's Gold emerged in 2006 from an unlikely collaboration between three men who had shaped Absolut vodka's legendary success: Peter Ekelund, Hans Brindfors (designer of the iconic Absolut bottle), and Olof Tranvik (who famously convinced Andy Warhol to create Absolut art). They recruited Börje Karlsson, Absolut's former master blender, to lead development. Beginning experiments in 2002, Karlsson pioneered a return to Sweden's potato-vodka heritage—ironic, given that Absolut itself was originally developed as a potato vodka to circumvent Sweden's strict production regulations. The result is a vodka with genuine terroir, made from seven heirloom potato varietals harvested from Cape Bjäre's distinctive soil. Each bottle requires approximately eight kilograms of virgin new potatoes, distilled at the purpose-built Gripsholm distillery in Åkers. The brand deliberately positions itself against the trend toward neutral, flavorless vodkas, instead championing a complex, character-driven spirit worthy of sipping neat with cracked black pepper—more akin to armagnac or calvados than conventional vodka.
Single-column distillation at Gripsholm distillery in Åkers, Sweden. Potatoes are mashed without added water, heated to 95°C, then treated with enzymes to convert starch into fermentable sugars. Distilled to 96% ABV then diluted to bottling strength. Approximately eight kilograms of virgin new potatoes per bottle. Charcoal filtration employed.
